About

Human Technology Futures is a group of UC Berkeley researchers and a proposed UC Berkeley department centering human experience in a rapidly changing technological world.

Our core mission is advancing research and teaching at the frontier of technology and societal impact. We bring together social science, humanities, arts, computing, and data to explore how AI is embedded in society, how data and algorithms shape concepts of human life, and how computational methods open new pathways into culture and human understanding. We work across disciplines to contribute to liveable futures across social-technical divides.

Technological futures are not predetermined. They are constructed across disciplines through imagination, values, power, institutions, and collective choices.

HTF bridges and connects faculty with homes in colleges, schools and departments across UC Berkeley, amplifying impact while contributing to a shared intellectual and teaching mission.

  • HTF seeks to advance knowledge and leadership at the frontier of human and social responsibilities of technological development.
  • HTF forges new educational pathways that equip students with durable capabilities combining humanistic and social scientific inquiry, technical competence, and ethical practice.

HTF has drawn together faculty across UC Berkeley since 2016. Its members contribute to departments and programs across campus and have shaped the design of the new College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS).
